Ministry Description

Hello! My name is Isaac Wagner, and I have a passion for TESL- Teaching English as a Second Language. English is the de facto international language across Asia, so TESL is a powerful tool for evangelism. English can also help church leaders access books and resources that might not be available in their own language. In 2023 I visited the Word of Life ministry in Japan and taught at the SYME school in Taichung City, Taiwan. I plan on returning to Asia in 2025.

SYME is a discipleship training center where students learn ministry and English skills as part of an immersive Christian discipleship program. Many students are preparing to study abroad at Bible colleges or seminaries. Others are looking to increase their walk with the Lord and their ability to do ministry in their local church. After finishing, some will attend seminaries and ministry training programs in Asia, others will finish their degrees and continue in their secular careers. ALL will have been trained to work with their local church in the areas of Youth Ministry, Discipleship and sharing the Gospel. SYME also accepts a number of unsaved students each term. These students are seeking spiritual truth and are open to God's Word. Many of them come to Christ and are equipped to effectively share their new-found faith with family, friends and coworkers using the materials and skills they have learned at SYME.

About Isaac

I was raised in a Christian home and baptized at the age of 12. I felt the call to ministry around the time I entered high school, and after graduating I attended the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. I currently take online classes with their sister school Southeastern Baptist, as I work towards an MA in Intercultural Studies. The Intercultural Studies program is a dedicated missionary training degree with a heavy emphasis on theology, linguistics and anthropology. It will prepare me for ministry, but will also allow me to pivot towards secular teaching jobs in Asia if a country does not allow me to enter as a formal missionary, or if God otherwise leads me that direction sometime in the future.

I became connected with Word of Life International several years ago and taught at their Taiwan English school in 2023. I fell in love with my students and with the everyday joys of being a teacher, as I became totally convinced that I was called to be a missionary. After completing my next term in Taiwan, I plan on becoming a permanent overseas missionary in East Asia.
