You'll fly into Lima brand-new International Airport, get your passport stamped, collect your luggage, clear customs and you are on your way to camp! First, you will enjoy a couple of days exploring the beautiful city of Lima, the largest capital city in South America located on the Pacific coast, featuring breathtaking cliffs that offer a unique view of the ocean and blending modernity with its famous colonial architecture and traditional balconies. Then you will travel to the camp along the Pan-American Highway, with the Pacific Ocean on your right and one of the strangest landscapes you have ever seen on your left—wide valleys and colorful, barren hills stretching across the horizon. An incredible experience! Most flights to Peru are day time flights arriving into Lima late evening around 10:00 pm to midnight. Some flights arrive in the morning around 6:00 am. In this case we'll head right to the camp after lunch this day.
You only need your valid passport—nothing else. No forms are required in advance. After arriving, you will go through the immigration booths, indicate how many days you plan to stay, and mention that you are attending the PALABRA DE VIDA camp in Cañete. Once you collect your luggage and clear customs, you’ll be on your way to one of the greatest adventures of your life!
Breakfast @ 7:30: fresh fruit, pancakes, cereal, toast, eggs, ham, etc. Lunch @ 12:30: Sandwiches, chips, fresh fruit, etc: Dinner @ 7:00: You'll enjoy Peruvian as well as American meals such as spaghetti and tacos, and typical Peruvian food such as “Lomo saltado”, “Ají de gallina”, “Sopa seca”, and the delicious rotisserie chicken with yellow French fries. And if you like fish, you will enjoy Peru’s number one dish, ceviche, as well as many other delicious seafood dishes! Finally, you’ll get to taste some of the finest coffee in South America!
In Lima, housing will be provided in a warm guest house owned by a European evangelical mission, located in a residential area of the city. At the camp, single volunteers will sleep in bunk beds in the camper buildings, while married couples will stay in cozy private rooms with a double bed and private bathroom. All the camp bathrooms are fully tiled and equipped with hot-water showers. And best of all, you will witness one of the most beautiful sunsets over the Pacific Ocean that you have ever seen!
You'll be picked up at the airport by our WOL staff. When you exit customs with your luggage, pass through the security doors and our staff will be there waiting for you along with many other people waiting for other passengers. Just don't leave that area until our staff finds you. There is free Wi-Fi in the airport, so we’ll be in touch with you from the moment you land.
A list of tools and other items will be supplied closer to the trip dates. You should have sun block and a brimmed hat for shade to cover your ears. The temperature on Peru’s coast is mild for most of the year, averaging between 64°F–72°F. It may be cloudy or sunny, but one thing you can be sure of is that it won’t rain—because that simply doesn’t happen on Peru’s coast! One more thing you should bring is mosquito repellent. Mosquitoes seem to have a special liking for American flesh! You'll need sheets for twin beds, a travel pillow, maybe a light blank, towels, swimming suit, water shoes or sandals for the beach (we’ll make a trip to the beach sometime during the week!), special snacks if you need them, basic tools if you work with electric, plumbing or such, work gloves, no umbrella for sure, a flash light, and personal toiletries. VERY IMPORTANT: Voltage is NOT the same as the US: it is 240 volt!!! There is WiFi at the camp.
The climate is prefect! 60 to 80 every day with cool mornings and warm afternoons. It is cool in the morning hours so you might need a long sleeve shirt, jacket or sweatshirt to wear for the first few hours. Work can be done in shorts and T-shirts. The gals may feel cooler in a light dress but shorts or jeans are fine. Sunday church is business casual dress and attended in a small town close to the camp or at the camp. If working in the sun you might use light colored long sleeve shirts. You do need to be aware of this! There are small biting gnats at the camp property and worse in the mornings. They hover at ground level in the grass areas so long pants will be better to keep them off your legs. Bug spray may help. But don't worry, you can't feel them bit and the bits only itch for about 3 weeks! These little creatures are also in Costa Rica and NY! Depending on the time of year, it may be sunny or cloudy, but the temperature is always ideal for working outdoors. The evenings cool down a bit and are very pleasant. The mornings can be a little chilly, so a good cup of coffee will really hit the spot! Church is business causal so for the men nice jeans or pants with a collared shirt for church and ladies may wear pants, dresses or skirts. Shorts are not considered church dress.
