~You would fly to Seoul/Incheon Airport (ICN). The trip is approximately 20-24 hours. Layovers may extend this time. ~If you are coming to serve for 90 days or less, you would enter Korea on a tourist visa. You may be required to apply for the K-ETA in order to enter Korea. This takes 72 hours to process so please apply for this in advance of your trip. ~If you are coming to serve for more than 90 days, we will apply for a religious worker (D6) visa.
United States citizens can stay in Korea on a tourist visa for up to 90 days and Canadian citizens for up to 180 days. If you plan to stay for more than 90 days, we will work with you to apply for a D-6 religious worker visa that allows you to stay for 1 year.
Korean food has a variety of flavors and spiciness that is different than western food. Mrs. Han, the ministry cook, is an excellent cook and provides delicious meals and she has prepared a dish for some foreigners who find that the food is too spicy. This gives you a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the tastes of Korean culture. The dining room is open for lunch and dinner from Tuesday lunch through Friday lunch. Beginning on Friday evening until Monday evening, you will be cooking or ordering food for yourself. You can buy a meal in a restaurant (some western-style restaurants are near the center) for around $7 - $10. There is also a nearby market that sells fresh fruits and vegetables as well as a variety of other foods.
Interns and single staff with WOL Korea mainland live in nearby dorms which are apartments that WOL leases. You would be able to eat many meals at the office but on the weekends and during breaks generally cook or order your own food. We currently use three apartments, two girls and one guys housing. Unmarried shorter-term missionaries are provided with a room or shared room in these apartments. The apartments are furnished and have a full kitchen, bathrooms, and a living room.
Transportation is readily available via walking, subway, bus, and taxi. Those with a driver’s license and international driver's license, may be eligible to drive a ministry vehicle pending field approval. Some of the full-time missionaries have vehicles and have been more than generous with offering to take you with them when they go to the grocery store or to church. Korea is generally safe and we do not have strict rules regarding in-dorms, travel, etc. and interns can explore Korea quite freely.
Your housing will be pretty well furnished. It is good to bring a laptop or tablet computer for work. If you wear large clothes or shoes, you may want to bring those with you, as they may be hard to purchase in Korea. Remember to bring an adapter or converter as 220v is used in South Korea. You can also purchase adapters here. If you have any special toiletries that you prefer or require you may want to bring them as there are not always as many options available in Korea. If you take any specific prescription medication, you will need to check with the team here to see if it is available in Korea. Word of Life Korea will provide sheets, a blanket, and a pillow. We will contact with a more detail list before you come.
During ministry times you are expected to wear either a black shirt or a WOLKO shirt of some sort, and blue or black jeans. As to the Korean culture, we also require that any visible tattoos are covered as well as any piercings (beside ears) are removed or replaced with clear spacers. Outside of WOLKO and on the weekends, dress can be casual but modest. Also, bring comfortable walking shoes, whatever is best for your feet – not good dress shoes for everyday wear. Bring comfortable slip-on slippers to wear inside your apartment and in the WOLKO center. Shoes are normally left in a designated area at the door in apartments, restaurants, etc. Bring clothing appropriate to Virginia weather and seasons. You may want to bring one nice outfit in case you are invited to attend a special occasion. More information on appropriate dress will be provided later.
A heart ready to serve the youth of Korea. Experience with teaching ESL is helpful but not required.
