Trip cost does not include airfare. You’ll fly into the Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND), get your passport stamped, collect your luggage, clear customs and then after exiting the secure part of the Airport, a Word of Life Japan staff member will be waiting to meet you! They will help you at the airport to exchange money (optional for souvenir shopping), get dinner and then they will travel with you to our ministry location in Tokorozawa. (about 2hours) Airfare is not included in trip cost.
U.S. citizens do not need a visa for short-term visits (up to 90 days) to Japan. This is part of a visa-free travel agreement between the United States and Japan. Convenient right! However, it's crucial to ensure your passport is valid for the duration of your stay and that you have a return ticket.
Japan has a rich variety of delicious foods that are sure to satisfy! Ranging from sushi, ramen, curry or okonomiyami (savory cabbage pancake) to more familiar western dishes like salads, hamburgers and pizza. There’s something for the food adventurer and those that prefer to play it safe. But either way, your sure to enjoy the amazing food in Japan.
For housing you will be able to enjoy the experience of staying in a Japanese home. This two-story home is usually occupied by one of our fulltime staff but will be made available exclusively to those participating on this trip. In Japan, in order to save space, it’s common to sleep on the floor on a foldable mattress called a futon. No more than two people will share a room and transportation to and from this home will be provided each day. Wi-Fi is available and if you need anything, Word of Life staff living locally are here to help!
Japan has one of the best public transportation systems in the world! Ranging from the famous bullet train to buses and taxis. While in Japan, you will have the opportunity to experience several types of transportation that are sure to make this a new and exciting experience. Nervous? Don’t be! Word of Life Japan Staff will help you each step of the way!
A list of tools and other items will be supplied closer to the trip dates. The weather in Japan in November is similar to the mid-west. So, it will be chilly. We recommend dressing in layers. Bring jeans, sweatshirts and a jacket. (bedding – sheets, blankets, pillow, towels) Electrical plug type and voltage is similar to the USA so a power adaptor is not needed. However, if you have items that use a three prong plug, it’s a good idea to pack 3 prong to 2 prong (ground lift) adaptors.
You can work in shorts or jeans, T-shirt and comfortable shoes for working. All work is indoors and heating is available is needed. Please no sandals or open toed shoes when working. Church is business casual so for the men, nice jeans or pants with a collared shirt. Ladies should plan on nice jeans or slacks, dresses or skirts.
Experience with basic construction is a plus. However, most importantly is a love for the Lord and willingness to serve. We also desire to serve and be a blessing to you also! So, if that’s you, then we would love to see you in Japan!
Japan has no legal prohibitions against religion, including Christianity. So, there’s no risk of persecution or censorship like some other Asian counties face. However, despite the religious freedom that Japan has, it remains one of the most difficult mission fields for the seeds of the gospel to take root. Today, less than 0.5% of the Japanese population identify as an evangelical Christian. Shinto and Buddhism are instead the two main religions found in Japan. Shinto is Japan’s indigenous religion and incorporates the worship of ancestors and nature. Meanwhile, Buddhism was imported to Japan in the 6th century and focuses on meditation and escaping the endless cycle of rebirth and suffering. Despite the vast number of Temples and Shrines found throughout Japan, many Japanese today are more atheistic in their daily lives. Of course, we know that Buddhism, Shintoism and atheism can never satisfy the true need that we all have in our hearts! Only the truth of the Gospel revealed through the act of God's loving sacrificial death, burial and resurrection for the forgiveness of sins can give these amazing people hope, purpose and joy! So, pray with us that God will use Word of Life Japan, other missionaries and His church to see revival in Japan! For those that are joining this trip, payments are due by September 5th and can be made on-line using this link: https://give.wol.org/003J7C So are you ready to sign up for this amazing adventure?
